Overview: The Integrative Science Complex at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon’s first new construction for the sciences since 1990 is planned for the north side of campus, between Franklin Boulevard and 13th Avenue, adjacent to the university’s newest science buildings. This two-phase project, expected to cost about $76 million, will add approximately 130,000 gross square feet of urgently needed space for:
  • Major shared instrumentation facilities
  • State-of the-art laboratories for interdisciplinary research teams
  • Meeting rooms and classrooms designed to facilitate integrative approaches
The Need: Although the UO’s research funding has increased by about 50 percent over just the last five years, the amount of total space assigned to the sciences has remained relatively unchanged. The Integrative Science Complex addresses critical space needs and will significantly enhance the UO’s leading educational and research programs in the sciences.

Phase 1: Lorry I. Lokey Laboratories, a signature research center associated with the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI)
Plans have been approved for an underground facility up to 30,000 gross square feet in size, to be located beneath the Science Green, the courtyard between Huestis and Deschutes halls.

Total estimated cost: $16 million

Funding: The 2003 Oregon Legislature authorized $9.5 million in lottery and general bonds for a new facility to house an ONAMI signature research center at UO. This authorization also allows the UO to raise up to $10 million from other sources. To date, $3 million has been pledged.

Phase 1 Timeline:
  • Groundbreaking for Phase 1, Lorry I. Lokey I. Laboratories, June 8, 2006
  • Projected completion of Phase 1: Fall 2007
Architects: SRG Partnership, Inc., Portland, Ore.

Contractor: Lease Crutcher Lewis of Portland, Ore.

Phase 2: Proposed Integrative Science Building
Plans call for up to 100,000 gross square feet of space for training and research, to be located north of Deschutes Hall on an undeveloped site fronting Franklin Boulevard.

Total estimated cost: $60 million

Proposed funding sources:
  • State IX-G Bonds/General Fund: $30 million (requires authorization by OUS and the Legislature)
  • Matching funds, to be raised from private gifts: $30 million ($7 million already in hand)
Phase 2 Timeline:
  • Anticipated groundbreaking for Phase 2, Integrative Science Building: 2009
  • Anticipated completion of Phase 2: 2011
