Mapping the Brain

 Return to Scientists

By harnessing the brain’s ability to reorganize itself to compensate for lost functions or to control devices outside the body, Scott Frey’s research is helping guide development of a new generation of prosthetic and assistive devices.

He leads a team of computer scientists, medical professionals and neuroscientists whose goal is to restore independence to people suffering from paralysis or loss of limb. Using a functional MRI machine, they’ve already mapped areas of the brain that are stimulated when stroke patients imagine picking up and using objects.

“Integrative science removes the walls that box us into our own scientific enclaves. Doing so is crucial in order to take science to the next level, through new kinds of collaborations that stimulate creativity and innovation.”
