Beneficial Microbe Hunter

 Return to Scientists

By rearing zebrafish in a "bubble" devoid of all microbes, Karen Guillemin has shown that the bacteria in the gut play crucial roles in normal development. Using molecular, genetic, and genomic approaches, her lab has discovered that bacteria use a wealth of different signaling strategies to communicate with their hosts and promote normal development or disease.

"We're running up against questions that require new approaches. The need to integrate ideas from many different disciplines keeps us on an incredible learning curve."
